Organization of your Stay

Even if you intend to follow an English language program at the Faculty, we would like to encourage you to learn German. It will certainly help you to discover the country and to make contact with its inhabitants more intensively.

Many private and public institutes and schools offer German courses in Germany and you can obtain a good overview with a lot of useful information about language learning from the internet pages of the DAAD. They also provide tests to help you to assess your language skills.

There are plenty of language schools and 'language cafés' in Frankfurt. Also, the Goethe-Institut offers language courses for German.

Exchange students can profit from opportunities to learn German at Goethe University. A pre-sessional one-month language and orientation course (DIA) takes place every year in March and September before the lecture period begins. Further information is provided by the general Global Office.

In addition, there are several German language courses organized and offered by the University's Centre of International Studies, addressing students with different levels of knowledge.

Health insurance
It is necessary for all students in Germany to have a valid health insurance for the whole period of their stay. German health insurance companies offer special student coverage for approximately 80 Euros per month.

Students from EU countries can keep their own home health insurances as well as their own private insurances and can bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which in case of illness is also valid in Germany.

Students from non-EU countries who do not possess a health insurance valid for Germany from their home country will here find some contacts to insurance companies in Frankfurt (information is provided in German!). You can find more information including helpful links in the Global Office's information brochure.

Others
To cover claims by third parties arising from personal liability cases, a personal liability insurance is recommended. Accident insurance while pursuing study activities is provided free of charge by the Federal Government of Germany. The special DAAD-Group Insurance Scheme comprises illness, personal accident, and private liability.

Student residences
Exchange students of our partner universities may apply for a room in a student residence. Most of the student residences are administered by the Student Services "Studentenwerk", a partner institution of the University. Unfortunately, there is a severe shortage of rooms which means that not all applications are successful.

Deadlines for application student residence

  • 1 June for the following winter semester
  • 1 December for the following summer semester

Frankfurt has a very well developed inner city network of public transport including bus lines, underground lines and tram lines organized by the “Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund”. If you take the subway (U-Bahn, line 1,2,3 or 8) to reach the Campus, please leave at "Holzhausenstraße".

For information on transport in Frankfurt and the greater Rhine-Main area, please see here.

Frankfurt Airport is located outside the city. Should you arrive by plane, you can reach Frankfurt/Main station in about 20 minutes by commuter train (S-Bahn). From the main station the journey to the University takes less than 10 minutes by underground.

Should you come from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, you can travel to Frankfurt with the private bus company Flibco. This takes about 1.5 hours.

All students applying for a semester abroad at Frankfurt University have to buy a semester ticket, allowing them to use public transport in Germany. The semester ticket can be obtained as QR Code.

To reach your destinations within Frankfurt you can also use the excellent infrastructure of bike paths that cross the town. With your Goethe Card you can use the service “Call a Bike” to rent a bicycle. This is for free for the first 60 minutes.
